Torticollis

TORTICOLLIS (WRY NECK)

Do you frequently wake up with a stiff neck, unable to move it for hours or days at a time? You’re your head tend to tilt downward or to one side? This may not be just a pain in the neck, it could be a condition called Torticollis.

Torticollis, known as “wry neck” is a twisting of the muscles in the neck which causes pain and a twisted, tilted neck. Typically, this condition is found in infants and small children where the muscles of the neck are permanently shortened. Torticollis can also be found in adults as a result of an injury or accident.

Fortunately, the staff here at 360 Physical Therapy & Wellness in Fulton, MD are experts in treating wry neck in infants, children, and adults. Call today for your consultation and learn how physical therapy for Torticollis is the right treatment for you.

WHAT CAUSES TORTICOLLIS?

Infant with torticollis

Torticollis can be caused in two ways. The first is congenital, meaning it happens during infancy. Usually when this happens, the baby’s head and neck are oddly positioned during the last few weeks in the womb. Torticollis can also occur at birth due to a decrease in blood supply to the neck and spine during difficult deliveries.

Torticollis can occur in adults as a result of an illness, accident, or injury. Any injury to the muscular or nervous system can cause scarring and tight muscles on one side of the neck.

Some types of Torticollis are temporary such as the stiff necks that are usually associated with ear infections, a cold, or minor injury. In many cases however, the symptoms can worsen over time if left untreated.

TREATING TORTICOLLIS WITH PHYSICAL THERAPY

Torticollis can make it difficult to turn your head from side to side. It can cause headaches, neck pain, and swollen muscles. Torticollis can cause developmental delays in infants resulting in postural misalignment, or a curved spine (scoliosis). Early identification of Torticollis in infants is key in allowing them to live mobile and pain-free lives!

The physical therapists at 360 Physical Therapy & Wellness take a holistic approach in treating Torticollis in patients of all ages. We will perform a full assessment to identify main areas of stress and evaluate other possible issues that can accompany Torticollis.

Physical therapy treatment for Torticollis (wry neck) includes:

  • Massage. Gentle massage along the muscles of the neck, specifically the sternocleidomastoid will help ease tension in these muscles and allow them to relax and lengthen.

  • Stretching exercises. Focusing on the mobility of the head and neck, stretching exercises address head rotation, side bending, and lateral flexion, moving the head up and down.

  • Functional strengthening. Improving the strength of the upper extremities will reduce muscular imbalances. Strengthening exercises include tummy time for infants, and seated stability movements for babies and toddlers.

Our fellowship-trained, board certified specialists understand the special considerations that must be considered when evaluating and treating infants and children. We believe that treating Torticollis with physical therapy is the best, safest way to begin living a life free of pain. We want your child to grow into the strong, independent person you want them to be and we’re here to help.

I love 360 Physical Therapy! Raj, is by far, the best. When my primary suggested I see a PT for minor back issues, I dismissed it and put it off for a year until my back went out for no reason

I went to 360 Physical Therapy after lumbar surgery. Dr. Raj pushes you and keeps you motivated but at the same time it is an easy going environment. He genuinely cares about his patients

Dr. Raj is great. He is very knowledgeable with all things PT and makes everyone feel comfortable. Beginning therapy for my shoulder was the first time I had ever done PT
