Blood flow restriction training (BFRT)

Blood flow restriction training (BFRT) for physical therapy improves muscular strength while reducing the impact of stress on the muscles and joints that are being exercised. BFRT applies external pressure over the extremities to maintain blood flow throughout the arteries.

Blood flow restriction training after knee surgery is an effective intervention in improving muscular strength, joint mobility, and overall functionality of the lower limbs.

Blood flow restriction is performed by placing a cuff/tourniquet around the patient’s thigh or arm and setting the device to an individualized pressure. The cuff partially restricts blood flow causing physiological changes that mimic changes associated with high intensity exercise. BFRT allows for similar improvements in strength that you may see with heavy weight training, however BFRT uses light loads to reduce stress on surrounding joints.

A recent study looked at BFRT therapy for Parkinson’s disease and found that they were able to improve functional movements, reduce restless leg syndrome, and maintain daily functioning for the patient being studied.

The physical therapists at 360 Physical Therapy & Wellness in Maple Lawn are specially trained in performing Blood Flow Restriction Training exercises on individuals that may benefit. BFRT is an effective intervention for osteoarthritis, knee pain, rotator cuff repairs and physical therapy after surgery.

Benefits of Blood Flow Restriction Training include:

  • Increased strength

  • Muscle hypertrophy

  • Improved injury rehabilitation

  • Improved recovery after surgery

  • Improved cardiovascular fitness

Blood Flow Restriction Training may not be for everyone. Individuals who have vascular conditions and high blood pressure, cancer patients, individuals on dialysis, and anyone with open wounds should not consider BFRT for physical therapy

If you have lost muscular strength as a result of an injury or trauma and are interested in learning more about the many benefits of Blood Flow Restriction Therapy, contact 360 Physical Therapy & Wellness in Maple Lawn We will work with you to identify an individualized approach to improving your current condition.
