Therapeutic exercise

Therapeutic exercise can help increase range of motion and decrease pain.

Therapeutic exercise can help increase range of motion and decrease pain.

Therapeutic exercise in physical therapy is designed to treat specific problems from trauma and injury. A physical therapist will assist with performing exercises to improve flexibility, balance, strength, and endurance. The goal of therapeutic exercise is to restore movement of otherwise immobile joints and muscles, improve overall function and strength, and prevent injury.

The physical therapists at 360 Physical Therapy & Wellness provide an individualized, one-on-one tailored approach to identifying your specific needs and prescribing exercises to address your areas of pain and limitedness.

Studies have proven therapeutic exercise an effective training method in increasing range of motion, decreasing pain, improving balance, and restoring function.

Therapeutic exercise for neck pain, low back pain, osteoarthritis of the knee, rotator cuff injuries, and ankle sprains is an effective intervention for reducing pain and restoring function

Therapeutic exercises performed at 360 Physical Therapy & Wellness can include:

  • Balance and proprioception exercises: these exercises help patients to maintain their center of gravity, and help improve balance and posture, making coordination easier in cases when this ability has been lost. They tend to require a lot of concentration to start with.

  • Flexibility exercises: These exercises target very specific muscle groups that typically have not been used for some time. Flexibility exercises include techniques such as stretching to improve range of motion and mobilization. The movements tend to be small or include gentle stretches. Stretching is a common intervention performed during physical therapy to increase muscle length and range of motion and reduce pain.

  • Strengthening exercises: Focused on improving the muscle power and strength of individuals whose muscles have been weakened as a result of an accident, trauma, or injury. The movements are performed with a greater resistance and fewer repetitions. Your physical therapist will prescribe functional strengthening exercises that are individually designed to improve the strength of the muscles surrounding your area of pain. We focus on training specific movement patterns to improve your ability at performing everyday tasks, pain-free.

  • Endurance exercises: These exercises are aimed at engaging larger muscle groups to improve endurance and strengthen muscles. Endurance exercises require a bit more conditioning and the individual should have completed a flexibility and strength program prior to attempting endurance-type exercises.
